Where is the Ranthambore National Park?
The Ranthambore National Park is located in the state of Rajasthan in
northwestern India. The capital city of Jaipur is located at a distance of
145 km from the park. Surrounded by the Vindhya and Aravali hill ranges, it
has sprawling tracts of the desert and semi-desert vegetation.
What is it famous for?
The Ranthambore National Park is famous for the Royal Bengal Tiger. It was
included under the Project Tiger scheme in the year 1972.
How will you gain access?
Jaipur (145 km), the capital city of Rajasthan is the nearest airport. The
airport operates regular flights connecting to almost all the key
destinations of India. Sawai Madhopur (12 km) serves as the closest
railhead. It is located at a distance of 11 km from Ranthambore. There
regular bus services from Jaipur to reach the park.
What is the best time?
The park remains open for visitors from October to June. However, the best
time to pay a visit to the park is between the months of November and April.
It is the time when animals can be easily spotted.
What constitutes the flora, fauna and avifauna?
The flora of the Ranthambore National park consists of dry deciduous
forests. Kulu (Sterculia urens), Ronj (Acacia leucophloea), Ber (Zizyphus
maudrentiana), Khimi (Manilkara hexandra), Tendu (Diospyrous melanoxylon),
Polas (Butea monosperma), Peepal, Mango and Banyan can be observed all over
the place. Various species of trees like salar (Boswellia serrata), gurjan
(Lannea coromandelica) and gum (Sterculia urens) can be found around the
four lakes in Ranthambore.
The animal inmates of the Park include leopards, Caracal, jungle cat,
hyena, jackal, sloth bear, wild boar, marsh crocodile, porcupine, common
Langur, spotted deer, Indian gazelle, Sambar (Asiatic stag) and Nilgai
(Bluebull). The park is popular all over for its tigers.
The park is home to around 270 species of birds, including a large number
of migratory birds. Some of the bird species are eagles, Indian horned owl,
spoonbills, partridge, quail, parakeets, kingfishers, storks, geese and
ducks.
