Where is the Desert National Park?
The Desert National Park is located at a distance of 40 km from Jaisalmer
in the northwestern Indian state of Rajasthan. Covering an area of 3100 sq
km, the park excellently preserves the ecosystem of the desert within its
confines. The park is wonderfully surrounded by the Vindhya and the Aravalli
ranges.
What is it famous for?
The Desert National Park is an excellent example of ecosystem of the Thar
desert. The park abounds in reptiles like monitor lizard, saw sealed viper,
Sind Krait, Russel's viper and Sandfish.
How will you gain access?

The
closest airport is at Jodhpur which lies at a distance of 290 km from the
park. Jaisalmer is the nearest railhead connecting to cities like Delhi,
Jaipur, Agra and Mumbai. A fabulous road-network links the park to all the
major destinations in and around the state of Rajasthan.
What is the best time?
It is best to visit the Desert National Park between the months November
and March. This is the winter time and the temperature ranges between 10
degrees and 25 degrees centigrade.
What constitutes the flora, fauna and avifauna?
The flora of the region consists of small grasses, shrubs and Xerophytic
trees. The animal inmates of the park include black buck, Chinkara, wolf,
Indian fox, Desert fox, Bengal fox and Desert cat. Reptiles such as monitor
lizard, saw sealed viper, Sind Krait, Russel's viper and Sandfish can be
easily observed in the park.
The park also takes pride in its rich variety of avian species. The
principle bird species include partridge, sand grouse, bee-eaters, lark,
Demoiselle crane, steppe eagle, Houbara, falcons and the Great Indian
bustard. Demoiselle crane and Houbara arrive in the winter season.

» Jaisalmer Fort
Built in golden and yellow sandstone, the Jaisalmer fort is a major
attraction around. It was erected in the year 1156. The fort is the second
oldest fort in Rajasthan. It was Rawal Jaiswal who began the construction of
the fort. The fort interestingly appears to be rising out of a desert haze.
