What goes behind the architecture?
The Qutub Minar soars up to a fabulous height of 239 feet and is the
highest stone tower in India. It has a diameter of 14.32 metres at the base
and 2.75 meters at the top. The first three storeys are built in red
sandstone while the fourth and the fifth storey are made of both marble and
sandstone. The gigantic tower is a fine example of Indo-Islamic
architecture. Inscriptions in Arabic and Nagari language can be seen on the
stone. The entrance to the tower is on the northern side. A spiral flight of
379 steps takes one up to the balcony on every floor and finally to a
platform at the top. The balconies are held together by stalactite vaulting
technique. The honey-comb pattern of the balconies is the key feature of the
Minar.
