Where is Haridwar?
Haridwar, a timeless source of Ayurvedic medicines and herbal remedies, is
located in the foothills of the Himalayas in the north Indian state of
Uttaranchal. It is known for its rich religious and cultural heritage. It is
one's gateway to the Four Pilgrimages in the Uttarakhand region.
How will you gain access?
The closest airport is the Jolly Grant in Dehradun. Haridwar is well
connected by trains to almost all the major cities of the country. The
National Highway no. 45 passes through Haridwar, providing it a fabulous
link to cities lying inside and outside the state.
What does it signify?
A pilgrimage to Haridwar is considered to be of high religious
significance. The holy Ganges leaves the mountains and enters the plains,
Haridwar being the first town to be welcomed. It is a firm belief of the
Hindu community that taking a bath here washes away all impurities of one's
soul, thereby taking one towards ultimate freedom Nirvana. Haridwan has been
blessed by the trinity of Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. The city has emerged
today as a major learning centre for arts, science and culture. It has, over
the ages, purified people's minds, their bodies and their souls.

» Har Ki Pauri
Har Ki Pauri is looked upon as one of the most sacred Ghats in the country.
It is believed that the Ghat was built by Vikramaditya in remembrance of his
brother Bhartrihari. Also known as Brahmakund, the Ghat gets packed with
devotees as Maha Arti is observed in the evenings. It is a sight that should
never be missed.
» Mansa Devi Temple
Located atop the Bilwa Parvat, the Mansa Devi Temple can be reached either
by the rope-way or by the normal trekking route that runs to the top. From
here one can have a wonderful view of Haridwar.
» Chandi Devi Temple
The Chandi Devi Temple is located on the top of a hill called Neel Parvat.
It was King of Kashmir Suchat Singh who got the temple built in 1929 AD. The
temple is a 3-km trek from the Chandi Ghat.
» Sapt Rishi
Sapt Rishi is the place where river Ganges divides herself into seven small
streams. The place provides magnificent sights to the amazement of the
onlookers.
»Maya Devi Temple
The Maya Devi Temple is among the Shaktipeeths (Shrines of special
significance) of the country. It is believed that as Shiva was carrying his
consort Sati, who had burnt herself to keep honour of her husband, her heart
and navel had fallen at this place.
What is the best time?
In Haridwar, summers are hot with temperature rising up to 40
degrees. During the winters, temperature drops down to a minimum of 6
degrees centigrade. However the place can be best visited between the months
of September and June.
