Where is Gangtok?
Nestled in the heart of the Himalayas, Gangtok lies in the state of Sikkim
in the Northeast India. The city enjoys the privilege of being the capital
of the state.
What is the city famous for?
The city is well known for its ancient Stupas and monasteries. Gangtok also
provides breathtaking views of the Kanchenjunga Peak, the third highest peak
in the world.
How will you gain access?
Bagdogra (124 km, 5 hours drive from Gangtok) is the closest airport.
Siliguri (114 km) and New Jalpaiguri (125 km) are the nearest and most
convenient railway stations. The Sikkim Nationalised Transport plies buses
connecting Gangtok to places like Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Siliguri etc.
What does the climate say?
Summers are warm and winters are cold. Temperature during the summer season
records a maximum of only 28 degrees centigrade. Temperature during the
winters can drop down to a minimum of 0.48 degrees centigrade. May to early
October is the time of the monsoons. The average annual rainfall of the city
records 3894 mm.

» Do-Drul Chorten
Do-Drul Chorten, built in 1945 by Trulshi Rimpoche, is regarded as the most
important Stupa in the state of Sikkim. The sacred gold-topped dome with 108
prayer wheels is truly an enchanting sight. Around the Charten are two huge
statues of Guru Rimpoche.
» Enchey Monastery
At a distance of 3 km from the city centre lies yet another attraction of
the city- the Enchey Monastery. The history of the monastery dates back 200
years. The site where the monastery has been built is said to have been
blessed by the Tantric master Lama Druptob Karpo. A splendid view of Mt.
Kanchenjunga can also be had from the place.
» Government Institute of Cottage Industries

The
Government Institute of Cottage Industries was set up in the year 1957.
Located uphill from the main market the institute stands with a view to
promoting local handicrafts. The institute is also provided with an outlet
selling interesting handicrafts like Tangkhas, carpets, dolls, masks etc.
» Research Institute of Tibetology
The far-famed Namgyal Research Institute of Tibetology reflects the typical
Tibetan style of architecture. Set amidst a profusion of magnolia and oak
trees, the institute promotes research work on subjects relating to the
Mahayana sect of Buddhism. The institute takes great pride in its exclusive
collection of thirty thousand volumes and translations of the original
teachings of Lord Buddha.
